Percussionist Jeff Willet returns with P O R T A L S, an hour-long composition featuring six hand-selected Chinese gongs with very unique aural characteristics. This piece was premiered live on the evening of Friday, October 2nd, 2015 as part of Mitch Nur’s 2015 Gong Camp, and professionally recorded the following weekend.

Chosen by Jeff from the massive stock at Steve Weiss Music, the six gongs featured on P O R T A L S take us on a rhythmic and melodic journey with tones forming part of a pentatonic scale, with no shortage of melodies and patterns in the piece. There is always something new around each corner, and a second listen will be sure to pick up on more subtle nuances throughout the piece, once you can get past the ultra-clear low frequency range that is put out by these gongs. All of the sounds were generated by the gongs (no electronic tones or instruments) to give the listener the effect of standing in front of these gongs and playing them.

“I had a lot of fun rehearsing, performing, and recording this piece,” says Jeff, “I really get lost in the harmonic structure of these particular gongs. Every time a new gong enters in the piece, it opens up a whole new dimension for it. I think the piece works well as a whole and I’m proud of how it came together. I hope it will be as enjoyable for the listeners as it has been for me.”

***Good headphones or speakers (preferably w/sub-woofer!) are recommended to get the full effect of the deep 49Hz bass tone of the 32” Heng gong. You’ll know it when you hear it...
